Proud of you Gogy! Keep doing your thing!
LIGHTTIME Opening Reception Tuesday April 27th
LA ESQUINA CAFE, 106 KENMARE ST., NEW YORK, NY
Gogy has been a familiar face in Lower Manhattan since his arrival from his hometown of Worcester, Massachusetts 5 years ago. While pursuing a degree in Photography and Design at NYU’s Gallatin School, Esparza cut as a Master Barber at Frank’s Chop Shop and also worked alongside photographers, David SHADI Perez and Mark Borthwick. A semester abroad in Madrid introduced him to Surrealism, and Gogy became entranced, fascinated with the movement. Gogy’s entire journey has manifested itself in his first, self-published book, LIGHTTIME.
LIGHTTIME is shot almost exclusively in 35mm black and white, and highlights his experimentation with movement, flash and exposure. From portraiture of friends and familiar faces (GZA, Aaron Bondaroff, and Estevan Oriol), to his dreamy, abstract manipulations of film, its pages depict the raw commotion in which he lives and was raised. And also his eye for the nebulous, ethereal beauty he at one time, often overlooked. Throughout the work, Gogy’s personal narrative aims to fuse the seemingly opposing styles together- an attempt at making them mesh and coexist despite their apparent polarity in the contemporary world.
